City public-records requests

Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Alternate Fridays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The City Clerk routes municipal requests as General, Police, Fire, or Property requests. When several departments may hold responsive records, city guidance calls for one General request. Requests may go through the portal, by email to PublicRecords@elcajon.gov, by mail, or in person. The form asks for the requester’s name, phone, email, record type, subject property address, description, delivery choice, and signature.

Under the California Public Records Act, the city normally makes a determination within 10 calendar days and may issue a written 14-day extension when allowed. The El Cajon request form states the standard copy rate of $0.25 per page plus actual duplication cost; most electronic requests are cost-free unless a schedule applies.
